Bento

A shared home app for couples: calendar with reminders, shared notes and lists, and a recipe book that sends ingredients straight to the shopping list — designed around one user's taste so it would actually get used.

Problem

My partner and I kept missing plans because I'm forgetful, and what we needed was scattered across a calendar app, a notes app, a shopping list and recipes saved everywhere. Nothing talked to anything else.

02

Approach

I built one central app around the things a household actually repeats: shared events with notifications, shared notes and lists, and a recipe book where one tap adds every ingredient to the shared shopping list. It's a Progressive Web App built in React with Supabase for the shared data, so it installs on any phone without an app store, and event reminders arrive as push notifications that each user can switch on in the settings.

The real design brief was adoption. A system only gets used if people feel at home in it, and my target user was clear: my partner. So the visual design was built around her taste first, and features came second.

03

Result

In daily use by both of us since July 2026. All upcoming appointments and medical visits now live in one shared calendar, so nothing depends on my memory any more, and we can see weeks and months ahead to organise around them. The weekly shop goes from recipes to list in one tap.

Design decisions

  • Design for the user who has to adopt it. The aesthetic was a requirement, not decoration: if my partner didn't enjoy opening it, the app would fail no matter how good the features were.
  • Connect the steps people already chain together. Recipe → ingredients → shopping list is one flow, so it became one tap.
  • No app store needed. As a PWA it installs from the browser on both our phones and still sends native push reminders.
  • One place for shared life. Calendar, notes, lists and meals in a single app removes the "where did we write that?" problem.
